Background of the Study
Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is a globally recommended practice that provides essential nutrients and antibodies to newborns, supporting optimal growth and development. Despite the known benefits, breastfeeding rates, particularly exclusive breastfeeding, remain suboptimal in many regions, including Bauchi State, Nigeria. Nurses, with their direct contact with mothers during prenatal, postnatal, and pediatric care, play a critical role in promoting and supporting exclusive breastfeeding (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024).
Breastfeeding promotion involves not only educating mothers about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding but also addressing barriers such as cultural misconceptions, lack of support, and work-related challenges. Nurses are in a unique position to offer guidance, practical support, and encouragement to mothers. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Bauchi State and identify the factors that affect their involvement in this process.
Statement of the Problem
Exclusive breastfeeding remains a challenge in Bauchi State due to various factors, including socio-cultural barriers, lack of maternal education, and inadequate healthcare support. Nurses, as primary caregivers in the maternal and child health continuum, are ideally placed to encourage exclusive breastfeeding, but their role in promoting it has not been adequately studied. This lack of understanding may hinder efforts to increase breastfeeding rates and improve maternal and child health outcomes in the state.
This study aims to assess the role of nurses in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Bauchi State, identify the challenges they face, and recommend strategies to enhance their involvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Bauchi State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
3. To recommend strategies for improving the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding by nurses.
Research Questions
1. What role do nurses play in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Bauchi State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in promoting exclusive breastfeeding?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding by nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Bauchi State play a significant role in promoting exclusive breastfeeding.
2. Socio-cultural barriers, lack of training, and inadequate resources hinder the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding by nurses.
3. Implementing targeted education programs and providing resources will improve the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding by nurses.
